Ethiopian National Day celebrated in New Delhi

The 21st anniversary of the down fall of the dictatorial military regime in Ethiopia was celebrated on 28 May2012 at the Embassy of Ethiopia in New Delhi.

The day marks the beginning of a new stride for Ethiopia along the path of democratization, peace, economic development and social transformation. Since 1991, Ethiopia built a Federal Democratic system, constitutionally assured equality of all nations and nationalities, enjoyed fast economic growth with annual average GDP growth rate of 11% for the past eight years and making Ethiopia the 3rd fastest growing Economy in the world.

In the social field, the Economist Magazine in its publication of 24 may 2012 stated that Ethiopia, together with few other African countries reduced fertility and child mortality rate. Thus under 5 years age child mortality in Ethiopia has gone down to 101/1000 in 2010 from 123/1000 in 2005 while maternal mortality rate has declined from 871/100000 in 2005 to 470/100000 in 2011.

The achievement in Education is so remarkable that today almost every school age child is able to attend school which made Gross enrolment Ratio to reach to more than 96%.

In the area of Foreign Relation, the cooperation between Ethiopia and India is at its best moment with closer political consultation, broader cooperation programmes and growing investment and trade ties.

Both governments are committed to further strengthen the existing cooperation in areas such as investment and trade promotion, financing development projects like sugar and railway sectors and human resource capacity building.
