INSPIRATION for 2010:

Years ago, in the feudal societies of India, highly trained female musicians performed songs and dances and provided companionship for royalty and wealthy merchants. Through their artistic performances, these well educated and skilled artists helped to maintain India's culture of music, dance and storytelling; priceless strands that weave the fabric of India's rich musical and lyrical heritage. Through time, the courtesan’s milieu has moved from the royal courts to female run salons, their art eventually being decoupled from the selling of their very soul.

This year’s collection stands inspired by one such courtesan, Alika; it visually pieces together her desire that the true love she feels for a royal is accepted by him and she is finally set free of the life she was born with. Set in her dreams, the collection is a voyage undertaken in her deepest senses. The colors of the collection depict what she feels in her dream, starting with Love and Purity, and then Hope followed by Despair and finally Triumph and celebration!

Fabrics such as Jersey, Dupion, Georgette and fine velvets embrace techniques ranging from Distressed foils, Digital printing, Appliqué, Laser cutting and the fabled JJ Valaya embroideries to create a collection which attempts to provide a perfect blend of the past with cutting edge contemporary chic. The color story begins with ivories and eventually culminates into myriad colors in the form of the signature JJ Valaya Trousseaux collection.
